PUNE: India’s medal hope in wrestling, Bajrang Punia, suffered a knee injury and forfeited his semifinal bout against Abdulmazhid Kudiev of Russia in Ali Aliyev meet at Kaspiysk in Russia on Friday.
Bajrang, who was 0-4 down to Kudiev, cried in pain and held his right knee during the bout and forfeit the match.
The Indian star was seen in pain and struggled to get up. The referee stopped the bout immediately and called the physio, who took Bajrang off the mat.
The injury, just 28 days ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, where Bajrang is seeded No. 2 in the 65kg category, will certainly affect his plans.
The injury is yet to be examined and the Haryana wrestler will go under a few scans in a few days.
However, his Georgian coach Shako Bentinidis said as per his assessment, the injury is not very serious and Bajrang will be back on the mat in a week or 10 days.
“I know it got everybody worried. I am not a doctor, but whatever I have seen in so many years of coaching, I feel he will be fine in 7-10 days,” the coach told TOI.
Bajrang has been training in Russia after he decided to skip Poland Open and participate in the Ali Aliyev meet.
