elon musk: Elon Musk’s internet service is arriving in August: What we know – Times of India

June 30, 2021

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that Starlink — his satellite-based broadband service — will be available globally starting August. Speaking at a virtual event at the Mobile World Congress, Musk said that Starlink internet coverage will be available — except for the North and South Pole — globally from August.
Where is Starlink currently available?
Starlink’s broadband service, according to Musk, is already operational in the test phase in about 12 countries and more are being added every month. There is no word on when the service will be available in India but users in the US, Australia and a few other countries have been using Starlink’s broadband internet service.
How many users does Starlink have now?
Musk said that Starlink already has about 69,000 active customers. “We are on our way to having a few hundred thousand users, possibly over 500,000 users within 12 months,” Musk said.
How does Starlink work?
Musk’s space exploration company — SpaceX —has launched around 1,800 low-orbit satellites. Since these are low-orbit satellites, they have shorter latency — which means the time it takes signals to travel between the satellites and Earth is less. This is what makes Starlink a faster internet service provider. More so, it makes it easier for Starlink to provide internet service in remote areas where so far internet access has been extremely limited.
How will Starlink reach your home?
Through partnerships. SpaceX and Musk will be working with major telecom carriers across the world for a broader reach. Musk at the MWC event said that, “We have two quite significant partnerships with major country carriers that I’d like to be able to announce now, but obviously we defer to our partners to make any announcement.” He also said that SpaceX is in discussions with a lot of other carriers to provide Starlink access.
