One overtly demonstrated distaste for a fizzy drink and the other quietly moved a bottle of non-alcoholic beverage out of plain sight. Both were at Euro 2020 press conferences where official sponsors display their products.
A unique form of protest seems to be gaining ground in Euro 2020.
On Monday night, Cristiano Ronaldo removed two bottles of Coke placed in front of him. The Portuguese star lifted a bottle of water and said, “agua” — water in Portuguese.
On Tuesday, France’s Paul Pogba moved a bottle of nonalcoholic Heineken NV beer at the press meet in Munich.
Coca-Cola’s stock price dropped 1.6% within hours of the episode, and its market value dipped $4 billion, to $238 billion.
Heineken’s shares shrugged off the snub, rising 1.7%. Both companies issued statements, respecting individual “drink preferences”.
A UEFA spokesperson said players at press conferences are offered water, alongside CocaCola Zero Sugar.
