Google Meet is being redesigned with new for video calling hardware – Times of India

June 30, 2021

Internet search giant Google is rolling out the redesigned layout of Google Meet to its dedicated video calling hardware, like Chromebase, the company has announced.
Starting July 7, the Google Meet redesigned layout will begin to roll out to both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains.
According to the company, these changes will bring a consistent experience for Google Meet.
As part of the redesign, Google is rolling out an option to customise how one appears in a meeting and how to view and present.
Here is a look at these features:

  • Google video calling hardware users will be able to tap over their video feed to select between a tile in the grid or a floating picture. They will also be able to reposition or hide it to help concentrate on the call.
  • A person’s self-view will appear in the bottom right of the grid, which as per Google allows them to focus on the video feeds at eye level.
  • Users will be able to unpin the content others share, allowing them to see more and larger video feeds.
  • Participant names will always be visible regardless of meeting size.
  • The meeting dial-in codes, attachments, the participants’ list, chat and other activities have been moved to the bottom right as the company says this will create more space to view people and content.
  • Volume and other controls are also consolidated in one place for easy access.
  • The leave call button is also removed from the microphone and camera buttons, which will prevent accidental call hang-ups as per Google.
  • The bottom bar will not cover captions and bottom video feeds and will always visible
  • The person who is speaking will have their tile outlined in blue, which is said to make it easier to identify who is speaking, especially in larger meetings.
  • Mute indicators are more subdued, helping to reduce visual distraction.
  • When there are more participants than can be shown on the grid, a tile is added to show who’s on the call.
