Google rolls out two new features to Messages app in India – Times of India

June 29, 2021

Internet search giant Google has rolled out new features to its Messages app in order to make it easier for users in India to differentiate important messages from unimportant ones.
“We’ve heard from many users in India that they receive a lot of different types of messages, from friends and family and businesses sending promotions, receipts, order confirmations and more. With so many incoming texts vying for your attention, it can be difficult to separate the important ones from everything else. To help you easily manage your messages, today we have two new updates to the Messages app to share,” said the company.
Here’s a look at them in detail:
New organisation layout
The first feature Messages will get is support for a new layout, which will be driven by machine learning. Google says that Messages will sort users’ messages into categories, including personal, transactions, OTPs, which should ideally help in easily finding the messages at the time of need.
That means that bank transactions and bills will be filtered into the transactions tab and conversations with saved numbers will be visible in the personal tab. “All of this happens safely on your device so your conversations stay in the app and you can access your categorised messages offline,” said Google.

Auto-delete of OTPs
This feature of the Messages app will enable users to keep their inbox free of clutter by automatic deletion of one-time passwords (OTPs) 24-hours after they were received. This feature will have to be enabled manually by tapping on ‘Continue’ when the app suggests a prompt to confirm the selection.
When do these features roll out?
According to a blog post by the company, these features on the Messages app will be rolled out over the coming weeks in English on Android phones in India running Android 8 and newer. These features are optional and can be managed in settings.
