David Warner of Sunrisers Hyderabad is in the news after he was dropped for the second time in this IPL season and watched a match from his hotel room. The Australian was one of the four changes made by Sunrisers in the team’s match against Rajasthan Royals on Monday night.
Jason Roy replaced him at the top of the order and put the Sunrisers on course for a seven-wicket victory with a 60 on debut. Instead of savouring a rare win, SRH were left to answer questions on Warner.
Apart from being the mainstay of the Sunrisers batting ever since he joined the squad in 2015, Warner was also their captain when they won their only IPL title in 2016. He also was part of the formidable opening partnership with Jonny Bairstow that mowed down opposition in 2019, including the record opening partnership of 185 against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
For someone who was the Orange cap holder in 2015 (540 runs), 2017 (641) and 2019 (593) and a standout season with 848 runs in 2016, this season has yielded paltry returns for Warner. In eight games so far, Warner has scored 195 runs, including scores of 0 and 2 in the UAE leg. His absence in the dugout on Monday night did not go unnoticed and TV pundits speculated that 34-year-old’s season could be over.
Warner added to the speculation. In reply to an Instagram post by a fan who told him to rest before returning, Warner replied: “Unfortunately won’t be again, but please keep supporting.”
Warner was not the only one who watched the match from his hotel room. “Dave is obviously watching the game back in the hotel and giving the guys support. He was not the only experienced player we left back at the hotel,” head coach Trevor Bayliss said after the match. “Kedar Jadhav and Shahbaz Nadeem also missed the game. We have to pick a squad of 18. That’s just the way it is.”
Bayliss also justified the decision to give youngsters like Priyam Garg and Abhishek Sharma a chance. “We have made a decision that we want young players to experience not just the matches but time at the ground, around the set-up, and for this match we made the decision,” Bayliss said.
Warner lost his captaincy in the first half of the IPL and was also left out of the squad but was seen in the dugout. Warner was dropped after he criticised the move to drop Manish Pandey from the squad.
