messenger rooms: WhatsApp removes Messenger Rooms shortcut from the chat share sheet: Report – Times of India

September 22, 2021

WhatsApp is reportedly removing the Facebook Messenger Rooms shortcut from the chat share sheet. According to a report by WaBetaInfo, the shortcut is no longer available for WhatsApp beta users on both Android and iOS devices. The report says that the instant messaging app may be coming with a ‘good replacement’ for the shortcut.
What is the Messenger Rooms shortcut on WhatsApp?
The shortcut was added to WhatsApp in May last year. Messenger Rooms shortcut on WhatsApp allowed users to create a group of up to 50 members to join a video call on Facebook. It clearly means that the shortcut was helpful only for those WhatsApp users who also use Facebook.
However, it seems to have not worked out on a mass scale. Because let’s say it, WhatsApp has its own video calling feature and adding a shortcut for video calls on Facebook made less sense and was probably meant to not attract many users.
“WhatsApp verifies which features are used by their users. If the feature didn’t achieve success, it means it’s the moment to modify it”, WaBetaInfo says in its report.
Currently, the shortcut has been removed for WhatsApp beta users. It is likely to be removed for non-beta users in a future update.
Meanwhile, WhatsApp is said to be working on a new feature to protect its users from abusive and spam messages. WhatsApp recently rolled out beta versions and for iOS that comes with an option to allow users to report specific messages on the platform. According to WABetaInfo, the new feature will enable the users to forward only the reported message to WhatsApp and also notify the sender about the report. This will be different from how a user reports a contact currently. At present, five most recent messages are forwarded to WhatsApp when a user reports another user.
