NASA shows how Tokyo looks from space during Olympics – Times of India

July 30, 2021

With Tokyo hosting the 2020 Summer Olympics, the capital city of Japan is all decked up to celebrate the spirit of the games. Despite being the first Olympics without any spectators, Tokyo did manage to shine from space. NASA recently posted a beautiful photo on Instagram showing Tokyo in all glory at night. The photo is taken from the International Space Station (ISS) by NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough.
“The Olympic games light up the night. #Tokyo glows bright with the magic of the @Olympics in this image captured by @NASAAstronauts @Astro_Kimbrough from the vantage point of the International Space Station (@ISS),” posted NASA on its official Instagram page.

This image was quick to go viral with over 6.9 lakh likes and 2000 comments within a day. A curious user asked NASA as to how far from Earth this photo was taken, to which NASA replied, “International Space Station orbits Earth at an average altitude of approximately 250 miles.”
Replying to another user when asked “What is NASA’s favourite sport?”, NASA said, “We love a good spacewalk. NASA astronauts can burn anywhere between 1,500-2,500 calories between prep time and a 6.5 hour spacewalk, so they always get a medal from us.”
