American chipmaker Qualcomm has unveiled Snapdragon 888++ 5G, its most powerful mobile chipset yet. The chip manufacturer made the announcement during the MWC 2021 keynote. The new chipset is an upgraded version of the SD 888, with an improved clock speed to 2.995 GHz exact (from 2.48GHz) and faster AI, with a claimed 20% improvement. Its predecessor can perform 26 trillion operations per second (TOPS) for AI tasks, but with the 20% improvement, the SD 888+ is capable of 32 TOPS. These two are the major improvements that have been made for the new chipset.
The hardware of the SD 888+ is identical to the SD 888. Both have the same GPU (the Adreno 680) and come with Snapdragon Elite Gaming features. The new chipset also comes with a 5G support with mmWave via its Snapdragon X60 Modem-RF system, FastConnect 6900 and triple ISP camera, just like its predecessor.
The company had announced the Snapdragon 870 chipset at the beginning of the year. The Snapdragon 870 5G chip claims a clock speed of up to 3.2 GHz and is armed with Kryo 585 CPU. It features the Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System for fast 5G connectivity with peak speeds of up to 7.5 GBps and the Qualcomm FastConnect 6800 system. Plus, it offers support for mmWave, Sub-6 GHz, TDD, FDD, and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS). With 5G and Wi-Fi 6 capabilities, the chipset also includes Adreno 650 GPU. The chipset features 5th gen AI Engine including a Qualcomm Hexagon 698 processor with Hexagon Tensor Accelerator, claiming up to 15 TOPS performance.
