NEW DELHI: The new set of Covid-19 containment rules put in place by the Tokyo Games Organising Committee (OC) for 11 participating nations, including India, has not only disturbed the travelling plans of the Indian contingent arriving in the Japanese capital but has also badly affected the training programme of athletes before their competition begins at the Games.
After the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) termed the OC’s decision to isolate athletes, coaches and support staff of India and 10 other nations for three days after checking into the Games Village as “unfair and discriminatory”, it sought on Monday further clarification from the organisers about whether the new entry conditions imposed by Japan affect the Indian athletes travelling directly to Tokyo from their respective foreign training locations.
IOA has also requested the OC to provide relaxation in the rule where the athletes travelling from India are required to carry a Covid negative RT-PCR test report 48 hours prior to their arrival in Tokyo, apart from extending the period of daily Covid-19 testing from the prescribed one week to nine days prior departure.
“We have a number of Indian athletes who are training abroad for more than 30 days and will be travelling directly from their training locations to Tokyo. Can you kindly confirm that these specific athletes will not be required to follow these additional entry conditions?” wrote IOA president Narinder Dhruv Batra in his letter to the OC’s director of NOC Relations and Services Team, Toru Kobayashi.
