August 7, 2021

Officials in the Indian contingent in Tokyo have been left embarrassed after the men’s 86kg freestyle wrestler Deepak Punia’s foreign coach Murad Gaidarov, from Russia, “misbehaved, assaulted and yelled” at match referee Sergie Kovalenko from Russia, who had officiated in the bronze medal repechage bout which the Haryana grappler lost (3-2) to San Marino’s Myles Nazim Amine on Thursday evening.
TOI has learnt that the incident happened after Deepak’s bout when coach Gaidarov got into an ugly scuffle with the match referee in one of the halls of the Makuhari Messe arena. After Kovalenko awarded the crucial two points to Amine for his ferocious takedown of Deepak in the last six seconds of the bout, which resulted in Deepak losing 3-2 after leading the contest 2-1, the Belarusian coach physically assaulted the referee and abused him and kicked the chair of UWW secretary general Michel Dusson.
Gaidarov has been sacked by the WFI and his contract has been terminated with immediate effect. He will be returning to India on Saturday morning to collect his belongings and has been booked on a flight home to Russia the next day on Sunday.
He was privately contracted by the WFI, along with Bajrang’s foreign coach Shako and Dahiya’s Kamal. Gaidarov, who has had hisa tory of temper tantrums, has been banned for three years from any association with wrestling by the United World Wrestling (UWW).
